So your called a bitch
So your called a bitch
"So you're called a Bitch!"
These days, in society, we give labels to people's attitudes, personalities or even by their dress code. It has been shown that most stereotypes are negative ones and furthermore are geared towards woman. There are more swear words directed to females than males. For instance, words like tramp, slut, whore, these all categorise woman to be promiscuous. Another example that I will focus on is the word bitch.
The definition of the word bitch is a female dog, thus suggesting that a female dog barks and that being called bitch means you always want something, are never happy, or are always complaining. Some people would just say that you are a chick with a bad attitude. Nonetheless society has evolved and has changed the meaning of the word bitch.
Over the past 10 years or so, the meaning of the word has had less importance as an insult, but more as a character trait in someone. It used to be said back in the 60's and 70's that the word bitch was a horrible insult and therefore woman were very offended by the term. Since then, as woman got more in control of their lives, careers and relationships, the word has become a symbol of power and authority.
I recently had a class in sociology and we were discussing stereotypes that men give to woman and vice versa. When the word bitch came up, the female students in the class responded with the statement that they enjoy being called that name. They elaborated on their response by saying that they feel in control, and get to be the boss in a particular situation. Moreover, they believed that men are attracted or aroused when a woman is in power and enjoy it when they call each other foul names. I, myself, enjoy being called this name because it gives me a sense of domination, authority and even confidence.
The problem is to what generation it is being said. I could see a parent or elder getting upset and angry at this term, because they are from a different time/era. In their years, as teenagers, they wouldn't use bad words anywhere, but they must understand that time passes. I believe that some would still be offended by it. As you get older and more mature you begin to respect others. On the other hand you might use the word bitch at someone, but wouldn't say it to his or her face, in fear of penalty. For example, a boss you don't like, you might not say it to their face because you might get fired. Another example could be a teacher you don't enjoy, you wouldn't say it to their face because it would be disrespectful and you might get kicked out of class.
Every day new swear words are being created and the old ones are being passed. For instance being called stupid use to be very disrespectful and harmful, but now a day we use it as a joke, it just slides in conversation with no big side effects. Another example is the word "fuck", it use to be insulting and banned from society, but now we see this word in movies, television and music. Eventually there will be no boundaries in foul language or reactions to terrible words. It seems that people are forgetting about the rules of respect for one and other, and not responding to the reducing of values and morals.
In summary the fact that someone is called a bitch shouldn't be a big deal because society's reaction to it is "who cares!" So what if your called a bitch, just laugh it off and forget about it.
