Saras Secret
Sara’s Secret
Moving to the big city was a big step for Sara. Her parents always warned her about the dangers of city life, but she never let the warnings hinder her decision. Her dream of a fast paced life has been with her for as long as she could remember, and nothing could change her mind. Sara was brought up in a small town about 200 miles from the city. This was a town in which everyone was friends with everyone, and most of the doors where never locked. Looking at this town was like looking at a painting that would be hanging up in a museum somewhere. In fact, Sara’s house looked like, it too, would have its own painting. Nothing was ever out of place, it even seemed as though each blade of grass knew that it had a particular position in which it need to stay, and the inside of their house was no different. Her parents where very protective over their only child. They always knew everything that went on in their daughter’s life; or so they thought. Sara kept something secret from her parents for as long as she could remember. Sara was born with something so different that she felt that if her parents ever found out, they wouldn’t ever be able to accept it. After Sara graduated from high school she felt as though she needed to get out of the life she knew, and start over in a whole new environment. Convincing her parents that she should move to the city was the hardest part for her, but finally after months of constant debating, her parents finally gave in. But they never stopped telling her how they felt. Even as Sara was walking out to the moving truck with the last box, her parents told her that she was making a mistake and that only trouble is found in big cities. But Sara wasn’t listening, she knew that she was going to love her new life, trouble and all. Sara’s apartment was on the small size but it didn’t seem to make a difference to her, she was finally on her own. She found a job at an accounting firm about a week after her arrival in the city. The tall building that her new job was in was a beautiful sight to her, and at that time she knew that she belonged there. Her new office was only about 6 blocks from her new home, so most of the time she walked to work. She would often stop to look up at the tall buildings, admiring how they seemed to look like those tall trees she once saw on a road trip with her parents. One day while stopping to view the scenery, she noticed that the sky was awfully dark, it looked like it was trying to imitate the grayness of the buildings. And at that point she thought that this day was one she was always going to remember. Not even two seconds after, she heard a woman screaming. It was a terrifying scream, she knew the women was in trouble. She looked all around, and heard it again. Looking up at an apartment building she noticed it was coming from the 4th floor. Sara knew that this woman was in a life or death matter, and that she was the only one who could help. To be able to help the women, Sara would have use her special talents, and that there was a risk of showing her true identity. But after another terrifying scream from the women, Sara was convinced her that it was a risk she had to take. Sara was the only one who could freeze time, and take the attacker as far away as possible. This is why her parents could never find out about her powers. If they knew that their daughter was different, they would end up distancing themselves from her. Sara grew up with this secret her whole life, but never really had to opportunity to use her powers to help others because of the very little danger in her hometown. Sara’s eyes were the tools that laid behind her powers, by just blinking, her powers could come to life. So after another scream, Sara blinked her eyes, and all the people in the city, country, world, became frozen as if they where mannequins in a department store window, trying to look lifelike. By flying up to the 4th story window she found the perpetrator with a knife about two inches away from the woman’s chest, the look on the women’s face was so horrifying. After removing the knife from the man’s hand, she picked him up and flew him out to the middle of nowhere. She set him down in a field and quickly returned back to the city to help the women. Figuring that the women would have a hard time realizing what happened, Sara decided to erase that part of her memory. With the blink of her eyes the memory was gone. Feeling quite good about herself, she left the 4th story apartment and went down to the street to the spot where she first heard the screaming. Before she had the chance to turn the world back into a chaotic mess, a faint light appeared from the manhole about 10ft away. The light then suddenly began to rise and form a shape of a man’s face, and it began to speak to her, “You have done a wonderful thing by helping that lady” the spirit said. “I have been waiting 19 years for you to use your powers to help others. And since the day has come, you will be rewarded. But first you must help out 2 more people by the end of the day, and then you can claim your prize.” Since Sara was a naturally helpful person, she decided to take him up on his offer. Remembering what her mother said, she knew that it wouldn’t be hard to find any trouble in the city. Looking for trouble wasn’t too common for Sara, in fact like most people, she tried to stay away from it; but an award did sound good. So she decided that she should walk around the street for awhile to see if she could find anyone in danger. It was already 2 o’clock and since she had a couple more hours of daylight, she didn’t worry too much about getting the “job” done. After about 10 minutes of walking, she spotted a man with his foot stuck in a side gutter. He was lying in the street frantically trying to pull it out. About 5 feet away there was a steamroller headed right for him, and there where people crowded around knowing that it was too late to save him. But Sara proved them wrong. Sara then flew in front of the steamroller and with her great physical strength, she stopped it dead in its tracks. The man then quickly pulled out his foot and ran to safety. Sara then let go of the steamroller and flew to the sidewalk, where everyone was staring at her. She knew this wasn’t a good sign so again she decided to use her powers to erase their memory. Not ever using that much of her powers, Sara was very weak after having doing that. She just hoped she would have enough energy to help out one more person. Sara then thought about where she could find trouble in a city, and immediately thought of the subway. So Sara then found the nearest staircase to the underground subway, and went down. Everyone was pushing and shoving, but no trouble, just the usual subway etiquette. About 20 minutes of walking around, she saw a young woman being harassed by a homeless man. He looked as though he was trying to get money from her. He kept on pointing to her purse, and then all of a sudden he grabbed it and started to run through the crowed. Sara knew this was a good opportunity to help out, so she started to run after the man. Flying was out of the question because she knew she wouldn’t be able to erase everyone’s mind when she was done. Pushing through these people was really hard for her, so Sara started to scream for someone to help her, but it was like no one even cared to see what was going on. She used what was left of her strength and started to shove people out of the way, soon she was right next to the thief. Sara then jumped and landed on the man, pinned him, and took the lady’s purse away from him. After getting the purse back to the women, she took him by the wrists up to the street to the nearest police officer. She told the policeman what happened and then left wondering when she was going to get her reward. Sara then started to walk up the street, to catch her breath. When she reached the spot where she had heard the first women scream, the city froze, not by her doing, but by the spirit. Again, a faint light appeared from the manhole, and turned into a man’s face. Sara was excited that she was finally going to get what she had been working so hard for. And then the spirit started to speak, “You have done well Sara, you have saved the two people you needed to, to be able to receive your prize. But the thing is, you have already received it.” Sara didn’t quite understand, so the spirit went on, “You saved not one life, but the life of many. And you have risked a lot, so a lot is returned to you. The best reward is not of material value, but the feeling of value in yourself.” The spirit then vanished just like it had appeared. Sara then knew what the spirit had taught her. Sara decided to dedicate her life to saving others, and to only use her powers for the good of mankind.
The End
