Divorce
Divorce"I want a divorce." These words are constantly heard on television, books and households. In the past centuries, marriage was considred sacred and divorce was a taboo that everyone avoided. Some couples chose to spend the rest of their lives with someone that they did not love anymore rather than deal with what
society had to say. In today's society, however, it seems as if divorce is just a way of life: one in every two marriages ended up in divorce. The main reasons why couples file for divorce are adultery, lack of love, and money.
In the Roman Catholic religion, the seventh commandment is "Thou shalt not commit adultery", while lust is one of the seven deadly sins. Whereas, it is common sense that due to human nature, people are never content with what they have. We always long for others even though we know that it is wrong and unfair. In the teenage drama, "Dawson's Creek", the main character's mother is caught having an affair with her co-worker. When asked why she cheated, she replies, "I had a perfect life" and admits that she longed for the feeling of needing something. In spite of the fact that it is just a television show, these instances do occur at a less exaggerated and realistic level. Adultery always breaks the trust in a marriage and
often creates hatred toward the unfaithful spouse.
Love. Does it even exist? Can people truly love the same person the same way for the rest of their lives? The phrase "I don't love you anymore", is frequently used as a reason for divorce. It does present itself as a justifiable reason. After all, a marriage is traditionally built on the love that a couple has for each other. Without love, there is no trust or happiness between the couple. Without this, the couple is sure to have a miserable life together. Couples often always choose to be divorced and alone than be miserable.
Money plays a vital role in our society. Many people think that money is the path to true happiness; an actress once said, "I've promised myself never to marry unless he has 15 million dollars willed to me and is guarantted to die within a week" (Unknown). Despite the countless novels and songs written, such as the Beatles'
"Can't Buy me Love", people still have this this misconception. With money comes greed and the impairment of people's judgement. These people only see the things that can be bought and the idea that they will find true happiness. People seem to think that they would be invincible with a sufficient amount of money.
Love does not always present itself so obviously. Ture love only exists in romance novels and our dreams. In reality, almost all marriages end with bitter divorce or separation due to adultery, lack of love and money. Some couples choose to work out their problems, while others choose to live their lives independently.
